“Giulietta Masina was one of my earliest inspirations, and I was deeply affected by her performances. Masina was a brilliant, idiosyncratic actress, like a gamine. Nights of Cabiria is one of my favorite films, and I’ve seen it many times. “Wind Sequence,” from They Come to Us without a Word, includes my favorite piece of music by Jason Moran, which we’ve included in many works. It also includes the magical presence of performer Zora Casebere” (Joan Jonas).
