“What inspired me about Ozu was the way he used the camera, which was often shooting up from the position of figures seated on the floor. I particularly liked the way he cut from one scene to another. He created poetic interludes using still shots with one small movement in them, accompanied by the dreamy music familiar from many of his films. I love those moments in his work—along with everything else” (Joan Jonas).
