Rustin. 2023. USA. Directed by George C. Wolfe. Screenplay by Julian Breece, Dustin Lance Black. With Coleman Domingo, Aml Ameen, Glynn Turman. DCP. Courtesy Netflix. 106 min.
Bayard Rustin was a “details guy,” and one of the most critical organizers of the Civil Rights movement. He was also a gay Black man in an era when that meant either hiding or denying your true nature, and Rustin’s lack of interest in those options cost him the recognition his work merited. Brilliantly embodied by Coleman Domingo, Rustin is seen here organizing the 1963 March on Washington. George C. Wolfe’s film is a strong corrective to the erasure of one of America’s true champions of social change.
