Occupied City. 2023. Netherlands/Great Britain/USA. Directed by Steve McQueen. DCP. Courtesy A24. 262 min.
Inscribed, but often unseen, in the architecture of civic spaces are the lives of those who have occupied them in the past. In an attempt to unveil those lost existences and experiences, director Steve McQueen uses voice-over and contemporary footage to reveal a hidden Amsterdam. Working from the book Atlas of an Occupied City: Amsterdam 1940–1945, written by his wife, Bianca Stigter, McQueen has created a mesmerizing, mirrored portrait of the past and present, and an urgent work in an era when murderous hatred once again plagues civil societies.
