Menus-Plaisirs Les Troisgros. 2023. France/USA. Directed by Frederick Wiseman. DCP. Courtesy Zipporah Films. In French; English subtitles. 240 min.
Frederick Wiseman, whose more than 50 years of filmmaking reside in MoMA’s collection after a major retrospective and publication in 2010, turns to a world that has long delighted him: food. At 93, the documentarian, who often jokes that his films’ subjects are dependent on their proximity to Michelin-starred restaurants, now goes straight to the source for one of his most riveting (and funny) films about explorations of the human appetite: Les Troisgros, one of France’s most inveterate culinary establishments, a hamlet restaurant in the Loire Valley that has been passed down through several family generations—and has managed to retain its three Michelin stars for 55 years running.
