The Pigeon Tunnel. 2023. USA. Directed by Erroll Morris. DCP. Courtesy Apple. 92 min.
Less an adaptation than an entertaining companion to John Le Carré’s 2016 autobiography The Pigeon Tunnel: Stories from My Life, the latest documentary from Errol Morris is grounded in engaging and intentionally provocative on-screen commentary by the ex-spy turned novelist, who died in 2020. Le Carré (born David Cornwell) and Morris explore the personal and professional phases of a life that plays out like a series of fictional episodes: Oxford education, absent mother, conflicted relations with a con-man father, roles in British Intelligence, and a real-life acquaintance with double-agent Kim Philby. In a style that will be familiar to Morris’s admirers, the film is a crafty mix of imaginatively shot and edited talking heads, speculative tangents, reenactments, taut musical accompaniment (Philip Glass and Paul Leonard-Morgan), and the filmmaker’s active presence on camera.
