In Fallen Leaves, fans of Finnish auteur Aki Kaurismäki will instantly recognize his signature minimalist, deadpan sensibility. Two Helsinkians seem to know hell better than others: Ansa (Alma Pöysti) works a lifeless, repetitive job at a grocery store and Holappa (Jussi Vatanen), a construction worker, is inseparable from his booze. When these desperately stoic souls meet, they are entirely out of practice in the game of courtship. Gloominess and romance may not mix, but in this Cannes Jury Prize winner they merge to surprisingly comical and heartfelt effect, providing a sweet, tender response to our troubled world.
