Maestro. 2023. USA. Written and directed by Bradley Cooper. With Cooper, Carey Mulligan, Matt Bomer. DCP. Courtesy Netflix. 129 min.
Bradley Cooper completes the filmmaking cycle by writing, directing, producing, and starring in Maestro, his ambitious, entertaining sophomore directorial effort. As in his A Star Is Born, Cooper chronicles a performer who lives in the public eye—this time the legendary composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein. The film follows Bernstein from his professional debut (a command performance at Carnegie Hall) to late in his life, and Cooper frames the story around the relationship between Bernstein and his wife, Felicia Montealegre, played with equal parts vim, vigor, and heartbreak by Carey Mulligan. Cooper the director captures Bernstein’s star power and cultural authority without shying away from his questionable tendency to use his stature to his advantage. Cooper the actor conveys Bernstein's brilliance and easy charm, and the musical performances are guaranteed crowd pleasers.
