Passages. 2023. France/Germany. Directed by Ira Sachs. Screenplay by Sachs, Mauricio Zacharias. With Franz Rogowski, Ben Whishaw, Adèle Exarchopoulos. DCP. Courtesy MUBI. In French; English subtitles. 91 min.
Ira Sachs assembles the strongest cast of his career (and perhaps the year) in Passages, his eighth (and, to date, his best) feature. Franz Rogowski, Ben Whishaw, and Adele Exarchopoulos form a magnetic, tumultuous love triangle, set off when Tomas (Rogowski), a self involved filmmaker, sleeps with schoolteacher Agathe (Exarchopoulos) at a wrap party for his latest film, severely complicating Tomas’s relationship with his English printmaker husband, Martin (Whishaw). Rogowski imbues Tomas with an attractive, restless energy that helps to soften (a bit) his character’s obnoxious behavior, and Whishaw is lovely as Martin, a man continually repulsed and recaptured by his lover. Sachs and Mauricio Zacharias’s script favors thoughtful exploration over judgment and tidy conclusions, making these characters utterly human and believable.
