Orlando, My Political Biography. 2023. France. Directed by Paul B. Preciado. DCP. Courtesy Sideshow/Janus Films. In French; English subtitles. 98 min.
From philosopher and writer Paul B. Preciado comes one of the year’s most incisive, rousing films. For his first foray into filmmaking, Preciado invited two dozen trans and non-binary individuals across generations and backgrounds to tell their stories through the time-traveling, gender-bending protagonist at the heart of Virginia Woolf’s 1928 novel Orlando: A Biography. Exuberant and stylish, this collective portrait stays true to its maker’s activist roots, exploding ideas of identification and representation onscreen and reimagining a cinematic form beyond binaries.
