Four Daughters. 2023. France/Germany/Tunisia/Saudi Arabia. Written and directed by Kaouther Ben Hania. DCP. Courtesy Kino Lorber. In Arabic; English subtitles. 107 min.
Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania’s gripping docudrama delves deep into the story of Olfa Hamrouni and her four daughters, the two eldest of whom vanished as teenagers in 2015 to join ISIS in Libya. Casting professional actors to play the missing girls and acclaimed Tunisian-Egyptian actress Hend Sabry as the formidable but complicated matriarch, Four Daughters combines first-person testimony with reenactments of pivotal moments in the family’s life. As adolescent rebellion and sisterhood fade into scenes of radicalization, the real-life Olfa periodically interrupts the proceedings to offer adjustments or further reflections, giving the film space to reflect on the social, patriarchal, and religious tensions beneath the surface. Full of tenderness and heartache, Ben Hania’s Cannes prizewinner is as innovative as it is poignant.
