In the beginning there was the baby doll…and that’s it. The aspirational goals for young girls vis-à-vis the dolls that were made and marketed to them before 1959 were motherhood, big-sisterhood, and perhaps nannydom. But then they met Barbie! Barbie can be anything and anyone, and she does it all in her own dreamhouse, Corvette, and bespoke (and very pink) “land.” Now, thanks to Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, fans of the Barbie doll can add writer/director and actor/producer of one of the biggest movies of all time to the list of aspirational goals they associate with this pop-culture icon. (Oh, and Ken’s there too, and he’s about to find out that he’s good “Kenough” on his own!)
