Oppenheimer. 2023. United Kingdom/USA. Written and directed by Christopher Nolan. With Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr. 35mm. Courtesy Universal Pictures. 180 min.
Brought to cinematic life by perhaps the only filmmaker who could turn the saga of J. Robert Oppenheimer and the Manhattan Project into a summer megahit, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer managed to take both audiences and Hollywood by surprise. An intense, hollowed out Cillian Murphy is Oppenheimer, the sun at the center of the film that pulls in and repels figures like Lewis Strauss (an excellent Robert Downey Jr.) and Kitty Oppenheimer (an equally strong Emily Blunt), who attempt to remain in his orbit as he punishes himself in pursuit of invention and struggles to deal with the aftermath of his success. Photographed by longtime Nolan collaborator Hoyte van Hoytema on large-format 65mm film, Oppenheimer pushes the boundaries of practical filmmaking by creating nuclear explosions with very little digital assistance. The result is a one-of-a-kind epic rendered on a human scale.
