May December. 2023. USA. Directed by Todd Haynes. Screenplay by Samy Burch. With Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, Charles Melton. DCP. Courtesy Netflix. 113 min.
The central theme of many of Todd Haynes’s films, from Safe to I’m Not There, is the essential unknowability of the self, and the all-too-human urge to perform different versions of ourselves for others. In his masterful May December —with knowing nods to Ingmar Bergman’s Persona and sensationalized tabloid TV movies of the 1970s and ’80s—Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman engage in a slyly seductive contest of wills. Moore is the notorious former high school teacher who allegedly lured her teenage student into a clandestine love affair. Portman is the actress who, many years later, visits the couple, now married with twins, in order to better understand the woman she is cast to play in a new film, using all manner of strategy to crack her thin veneer of suburban domestic complacency.
