Proclaiming her admiration for the “continuing vitality and thrust of the animated film” early in her career as a curator, Mancia did more to advance animation programming at the Museum than anyone before her. Beginning in 1968, her attendance at animation festivals in Zagreb, Annecy, and Ottawa brought hundreds of shorts to audiences in New York in annual programs celebrating an otherwise “often neglected aspect of filmmaking” that she praised for its “great formal beauty.” Describing what distinguished short-form animation, she emphasized “a satirical wit, experimentation with modern graphic forms and composition, color harmony, and a contrapuntal use of music and sound effects.” Organized from the Museum’s collection, this program of films from Eastern Europe, Russia, Canada, and the US includes line (Wykes) and cut-paper animation (Fine Feathers), psychedelic (Macka) and impressionistic styles (The Heron and the Crane), and classical cell animation from East Coast independent (The Adventures of an *) and Hollywood studios (Robin Hood Daffy). Among the composers supporting the visual art are Maurice Blackburn, Benny Carter and Lionel Hampton, Olau Ehala (Time Out), Luboš Fišer (Parcels), M. Meyerovich, Franco Potenza and Zvonimir Golob, and Carl Stalling.
