The Traveler, Abbas Kiarostami’s first feature film, is a suspenseful, ceaselessly charming tale about a young boy’s determination to travel from his small town to the big city of Tehran for a national football match. The film bears all the hallmarks of classic Kiarostami: a neorealist fascination with nonprofessional actors (all of them brilliant here), authentic locales, and the timeless theme of innocence and experience.

This film accompanies Iranian Cinema before the Revolution, 1925–1979.
