Khaneh-ye Khoda (House of God). 1966. Iran. Directed by Jalal Moghaddam, Abolghassem Rezai. 35mm courtesy Cinémathèque française. 95 min.
The first film about the annual pilgrimage of Muslims to Mecca was shot with the permission of the Saudi king and turned out to be a huge success in Iran, even among devout followers of Islam who shunned movies as sinful. Although the New Wave filmmaker and actor Jalal Moghaddam is often credited as the sole director of the film, it was in fact made in partnership with the film’s producer, Abolghassem Rezaie.
