Screenplay by Dalton Trumbo, Donald Ogden Stewart. With Ginger Rogers, Dennis Morgan, James Craig, Gladys Cooper. As the title character, Rogers journeys from a working-class neighborhood in Philadelphia to the fashion district of Manhattan, struggling all the while with her conflicted feelings for an idealistic, penniless young doctor (Craig) and an inconveniently married but socially prominent publisher (Morgan). The screenplay, by two future blacklistees, maintains a sharp sense of class tensions—apparently escaping the attention of director Wood, later to become one of Hollywood’s most passionate supporters of the HUAC. 35mm.
