Robert Rauschenberg believed that art is more real when it is made out of the real world. Hence his creation of the combine, a type of work in which he affixed cast-off items, such as tires or old furniture, to a traditional support. Visit Rauschenberg's Bed (1955)—his actual bed stretched on canvas—discuss how it exemplifies his desire to act in the gap between art and life, and gain inspiration to make your own combine from life.
