La revue des revues (Parisian Pleasures). 1927. France/Germany. Directed by Joe Francys. Silent. DCP. 103 min.
Pioneering black star Josephine Baker steals this thinly-plotted, Cinderella-themed Jazz Age anthology of French nightlife performances. Stenciling and tinting add to the colorful, boundary-pushing sensuality of production numbers, featuring acrobatics, exotic dancing by famed troupes, including Tiller’s Follies Girls, Ruth Zackey and the Hoffman Girls, and Baker’s legendary “Charleston shimmy.” Serge Bromberg’s Lobster Films is responsible for the painstaking recovery and restoration that went into its preservation.
