Firstness explores the relationship between Keith (Tim Kinsella), a maladjusted father who tries to heal himself in an experimental therapy group, and his nonbinary child Tavi, who develops an unlikely friendship with an older man, Julien. Through these deep and powerful relationships, Keith works to find his own path to betterment while navigating the painful love of parenthood, and Julian tries to reenter society. Against a serene, surreal New Mexico landscape, Tavi recenters those around them by providing what Keith and Julien need most dearly: truth.
