Suave bourgeois Fernando Rey is continually frustrated in his attempts to consummate his passion for Conchita the maid—played interchangeably (and without explanation) by cool Frenchwoman Carole Bouquet and fiery Spaniard Ángela Molina. The final film by Luis Buñuel (who was 77 at the time of its release), it was nominated for a Best Foreign Film Academy Award. “With an effortlessness matched by no other director today, Buñuel creates a vision of a world as logical as a theorem, as mysterious as a dream, and as funny as a vaudeville gag” (Vincent Canby).
