La Marche a suivre (Guidelines). 2014. Canada. Directed by Jean-Francois Caissy. In French; English subtitles. 75 min.
A remote Quebec high school and its rural environs are the setting of this nuanced portrait of authority, rebellion, and adolescence. Disciplinary sessions for “disruptive” students, in which teens chafe under the strictures of an adult-regulated world, are contrasted with stunning long-take sequences of control being reasserted after school: burning rubber, basketball practice, and leaps from bridges—the often risky, seemingly irrational, but necessary release-valves of youth.
