The Sea Hawk. 1940. USA. Directed by Michael Curtiz. Screenplay by Howard Koch, Seton I. Miller. With Errol Flynn, Brenda Marshall, Claude Rains, Donald Crisp, Flora Robson, Alan Hale. 35mm. 127 min.
Warner Bros. was still taking an isolationist attitude toward the growing conflict in Europe when The Adventures of Robin Hood was released (one theme: leaders should not get involved in foreign wars while there are still problems at home), but two years later they went all-in for intervention with The Sea Hawk, starring Flynn as an English privateer who can’t wait to go after the Spanish—if only Good Queen Bess (Flora Robson) will give him the go-ahead. Curtiz takes full advantage of the monumental budget with his magnificent overhead vistas and sinuous tracking shots, while Flynn has perfected the elegant nonchalance he discovered with Captain Blood.
