In these recent nonfiction works, artists and filmmakers create cinematic incantations across time and space. Conspiracy, co-directed by Simone Leigh and Madeleine Hunt-Ehlrich and first presented as part of Leigh’s award-winning participation in the 2022 Venice Biennale, is a hypnotic, black-and-white elegy to sculptural creation via the legacy of mid-century artist Ruth Inge Hardison. Parastoo Anoushahpour’s The Time That Separates Us uses the tale of Sodom and Gomorrah to explore contested geographies and narratives along the Jordan River Valley, depicting the landscape through multiple media, including security camera footage, 8mm film, smartphone imagery, and vintage photography. A pair of Kevin Jerome Everson shorts weave through the screening program, crystallizing its poetic exploration of gesture and superimposition. Through his signature supple, vivid imagery, the films evoke different registers of history: one channels the 1966 Cleveland Uprising, another considers family ties and America’s favorite sport.
