In Marco Ferreri’s clever spin on Franz Kafka’s The Castle, a young man (Enzo Jannacci) seeking an audience with the Pope is put through a series of maddening trials. The film’s all-star cast represents the different stations of bureaucracy (military, political, and ecclesiastical) that crush his spirit. Ugo Tognazzi is the inspector who suspects his motives, enlisting Claudia Cardinale to follow his every move. Emotional entanglements ensue….
