Intoxicated by the melancholic beauty of fin-de-siècle Florence, a headstrong but gullible Tuscan peasant (Jean-Paul Belmondo) risks his inheritance and his last shred of dignity by becoming mixed up in a violent love triangle with a world-weary Florentine prostitute (Claudia Cardinale). Mauro Bolognini’s adaptation of a 1899 novel by Mario Pratesi owes much of its decadent realism to the costumes and set designs of the great Piero Tosi, best known for his work on The Leopard, Rocco and His Brothers, and other Luchino Visconti masterpieces.
