Bay Area–based filmmaker Bill Basquin presents the New York premiere of his feature From Inside of Here (2020), which explores the relationship between body and landscape. Filmed over the course of camping trips spanning three years in New Mexico’s Gila National Forest, the film is a meditation on vulnerability and interdependence, inspired by the Forest’s designation as a reintroduction site for the endangered Mexican wolf. (In the early 1900s, this subspecies of gray wolf was brought close to extinction by the US Bureau of Biological Survey—the direct predecessor of the US Fish and Wildlife Service currently tasked with re-establishing the species). Combining 16mm, high-definition video, infrared stills, text, and sound recordings, Basquin imbues the landscape-film genre with a keen sensitivity to both difference and movement. The screening will be followed by a conversation with Basquin, moderated by mayfield brooks, a self-described “movement-based performance artist, vocalist, urban farmer, writer, and wanderer.”
