Winner of the Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director, The Shape of Water chronicles the unconventional romance between a mute custodian at a highly classified government laboratory (Sally Hawkins) and a human-amphibian hybrid (Doug Jones) who is imprisoned there. The couple finds solace in their mutual alienation, and learn to communicate above and beyond spoken language, all while attempting to protect their relationship from outside surveillance. With quietly devastating performances from Hawkins and Jones, The Shape of Water is a poignant addition to the ever-popular “paranormal romance” genre, and only the second fantasy film in history to win the Best Picture accolade.
