Dry Ground Burning. 2022. Brazil. Directed by Joana Pimenta and Adirley Queirós. DCP. In Portuguese; English subtitles. 154 min.
In Brasilia’s Sol Nascente favela, sisters Chitarra and Léa lead an all-female gang that siphons oil from a government pipeline and sells the clandestine gas to motorcycle squads in the dark of night. This second collaboration between Joana Pimenta and Adirley Queirós (Once There Was Brasilia, 2017) is a white-hot, shape-shifting portrait of contemporary Brazil by those at the margins of the Bolsonaro regime—the incarcerated, queer folks, and Braziians of color—who can envision, and fight, for a different future. Combining real-life footage and astonishing performances by its twin leads (Joana Darc Furtado and Léa Alves da Silva, who play alternate versions of themselves), Dry Ground Burning is a rousing antiauthoritarian battle cry and a stylish cinematic tour de force.
