Played by Cate Blanchett with astonishing discipline and precision, Lydia Tár is a world-famous composer so intensely focused on her interpretations of Bach and Mahler, and so smugly armored in her own self-mythologizing power, that she is blind to the sudden precarity of her place in culture and society. Todd Field’s TÁR reimagines The Rules of the Game for our own socially volatile times, questioning the limits of tolerance and mastery in a liberal democracy.
