All the Beauty and the Bloodshed. 2022. USA. Directed by Laura Poitras. DCP. 122 min.
A survivor of the opioid epidemic, photographer Nan Goldin has used her art and fame to call attention to those accountable for the national health crisis. Documentarian Laura Poitras (Citizenfour) follows Goldin’s battle against the Sackler family, whose pharmaceutical company made and benefited from the overuse of the highly addictive OxyContin. Staging her protests at art museums around the world that have championed her art, Goldin calls out institutions that accept contributions from the Sacklers. Poitras’s smartly structured documentary ties Goldin’s latest endeavor to her past, including her experiences and body of work made during the AIDS crisis, to craft a moving and intimate tale that weaves together art, politics, activism, and personal tragedy. Winner of the Venice Film Festival’s Golden Lion.
