Joanna Hogg’s latest excavation of memory and family dynamics is a gripping, Gothic-inspired chamber piece. In an astonishing dual performance, Tilda Swinton stars as Julie, a middle-aged filmmaker who returns to a former family home with her elderly mother. The estate, in the depths of the English countryside, is now a hotel, where they seem to be the only guests. From these pitch-perfect ingredients for a ghost story, Hogg crafts something more visceral—a tale of being haunted by the past.
