25-year-old Freddie never thought much about South Korea, her first home before being adopted and raised in France. When she unexpectedly finds herself in Seoul, the young woman makes sure to treat the land and its people with near total indifference. It soon becomes apparent that each breath and step she takes draws her closer to her roots. First time actor Park Ji-min’s stunning performance reveals layers of emotions and vulnerability behind a standoffish and tough facade. Davy Chou’s sophomore feature, a follow up to New Directors/New Films title Diamond Island (2016), is a captivating and penetrating portrait of a young woman who invents and reinvents herself only on her own–unpredictable–terms.
