Hurtling toward oblivion, hunting for an escape from his pain, Charlie is both Ahab and his prey. Based on the play by Samuel D. Hunter, Darren Aronofsky’s film conveys the pain of guilt and lost love with an intense intimacy and physicality. Rendered gently, and with profound humanity, by Brendan Fraser, Charlie’s journey into the abyss is both disturbing and mesmerizing. Working with cinematographer Matthew Libatique in the confines of a small apartment, Aronofsky demonstrates that he is capable of delivering the emotional impact for which his films are known in a completely different register.
