Often, the most public and celebrated figures in history are the ones we know the least about. Empress Elisabeth of Austria was an extremely famous woman in late-19th-century Europe, and was celebrated in the 20th century in the “Sissi” films (incarnated by Romy Schneider). Yet director Marie Kreutzer speculates that, despite this notoriety, perhaps we know nothing of the life and thoughts of the woman herself. Vibrantly portrayed by Vicky Kreips (who won Best Performance in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2022 Cannes Film Festival), this empress is both witty and weary, smart and fickle. Enhanced by sumptuous costumes and production design, this thoroughly contemporary tale gives us a glimpse into what it may have been like to be a legend of history. Courtesy IFC Films
