Noah Baumbach’s adaptation of White Noise retains much of Don DeLillo’s philosophizing and antic humor, while also remaining very much a Noah Baumbach movie: a Chicken Little parable of death in life, self-medication through pills and deli meats, and the aching void that can never be filled by academic tenure, conspicuous consumption, disaster porn, or the nuclear family. Beyond its clever postmodern nods to Andreas Gursky, Leni Riefenstahl, Network, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and the Griswolds of National Lampoon’s Vacation, White Noise is a marriage story on a grand scale, that of Twilight in America circa the 1980s…or 2020s.
