Argentina, 1985. 2022. Argentina/USA. Directed by Santiago Mitre. Screenplay by Mitre, Mariano Llinás. With Richardo Darín, Peter Lanzani, Norman Briski. DCP. In Spanish; English subtitles. 140 min.
Like so many other histories of state-sponsored torture and murder, the military dictatorship that mercilessly ruled Argentina between 1976 and 1983 could easily have been whitewashed and its perpetrators gone unpunished. That Argentina’s Dirty War was exposed as a series of premeditated crimes against humanity, as Santiago Mitre’s gripping drama suggests, is due to the Herculean, even seemingly Sisyphean, efforts of a makeshift group of federal prosecutors led by Julia César Strassera (Ricardo Darín, in a career-defining performance). Told as a David and Goliath story in classic Hollywood fashion, Argentina 1985 evokes the breathless suspense felt in the courtroom and on the streets, in newspapers and on television, as the nation’s future lay in the balance.
