Now a spritely 84, the great filmmaker Jerzy Skolimowski (Deep End, Moonlighting, Essential Killing) returns to the big screen with this sleeper hit of Cannes 2022, winner of that festival’s Critic’s Prize and now Poland’s candidate for an Academy Award. EO makes obvious allusion to Robert Bresson’s Au hasard, Balthasar, charting the pilgrim’s progress of a donkey across the Alps, but the film could equally be likened to Gunda or Leviathan (or even Benji, for that matter) in its empathic—not anthropomorphic—portrait of an animal’s life that nonetheless becomes an allegory of human history and fate.
