The Banshees of Inisherin. 2022. Ireland/UK/USA. Written and directed by Martin McDonagh. With Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon. DCP. 109 min.
Reuniting Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell for the first time since his 2008 film In Bruges, writer/director Martin McDonagh crafts a dark yet tender story of friendship and country. Amid the Irish Civil War of the early 1920s, on the fictional island of Inisherin, Colm (Gleeson) suddenly decides to cut ties with his longtime friend Pádraic (Farrell). Pádraic grows increasingly frustrated and refuses to accept Colm’s silent treatment, leading Colm to retaliate in drastic ways. Featuring his signature acerbic wit, McDonagh’s script is deft and hilarious, posing questions about the nature of human connection and what it really means to love something. The masterful lead performances are met in equal measure by Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon, who round out this excellent ensemble cast (animals included). Courtesy Searchlight Pictures
