Follow the Fleet. 1936. USA. Directed by Mark Sandrich. 110 min.
Screenplay by Dwight Taylor, Allan Scott. With Ginger Rogers, Fred Astaire, Randolph Scott, Harriet Hilliard, Astrid Allwyn. RKO shrewdly followed the upper class Euro-fantasy of Top Hat with the proletarian grit of Follow the Fleet, which features Ginger in a throwback to her Warner Bros. chorus girl roles and Fred as her former dance partner, now a reluctant sea dog. The choreography, by Astaire and Hermes Pan, develops the competitive nature of the stars’ relationship, building toward the toe-curling romantic surrender of “Let’s Face the Music and Dance,” shot in an astounding three-minute single take.
