The Honour Keeper (Lajwanti). 2014. India. Directed by Pushpendra Singh. In Hindi; English subtitles. 63 min.
In the sun-drenched Thar Desert of Rajasthan, love has its own logic. A young woman who wears a veil to guard her modesty is intrigued by a mysterious man with an eccentric obsession. Against the barren backdrop, a wellspring of passion and desire opens up. Inspired by the boundless landscape, director Pushpendra Singh, who also plays the male lead, enjoys complete freedom to craft a story as elusive and amorphous as shifting desert sand. Based on a folktale by Rajasthani writer Vijaydan Detha, Singh’s directorial debut is an ode to Mani Kaul, whose equally dreamlike and magical classic Duvidha (1973) is also adapted from Detha’s writing.
