Violation. 2020. Canada. Written and directed by Madeleine Sims-Fewer, Dusty Mancinelli. With Madeleine Sims-Fewer, Anna Maguire, Jesse LaVercombe, Obi Abili, Jasmin Geljo, Cynthia Ashperger. 107 min.
The debut feature from Madeleine Sims-Fewer and Dusty Mancinelli is an unsettlingly real exploration of the boundaries of consent. Miriam (played by Sims-Fewer), her marriage on the decline, returns to her hometown to spend some time with her sister. Feeling vulnerable but safe, she spends a night by the fire with her brother-in-law, who happens to be an old friend…and something happens that changes everything. What she believes to be rape, he believes to be consensual, and no one believes her. In a violent rage, Miriam seeks revenge against her brother-in-law, not only to avenge herself but to protect her sister. Violation is about bodies, boundaries, and how one woman works through her trauma after surviving a life-altering attack.
