Le bel âge. 1960. France. Directed by Pierre Kast. Screenplay by Kast, Jacques Doniol-Valcroze. With Loleh Bellon, Marcello Pagliero, Ursula Kubler. 16mm. In French; English subtitles. 100 min.
A former member of the French Resistance and onetime editor of Cahiers du cinéma, Pierre Kast was a dandy scholar at the margins of the New Wave who nonetheless, like Jacques Doniol-Valcroze in L’eau à la bouche, used novel filmmaking techniques to engage in a playful bit of literary “marivaudage.” Indeed, Le bel âge, a film in three episodes, features dialogue and a performance by Doniol-Valcroze, a fellow Cahiers critic.
