Alain Delon, Jean-Pierre Léaud, Juliette Gréco, and Jean-Claude Brialy make short appearances in this first feature film by a director with a unique and unjustly overlooked career. Under the guise of an ordinary love story, L’amour à la mer finds a way to evoke myriad aspects of life—including war. Guy Gilles freely and jubilantly uses popular songs, voiceovers, photographs, flashbacks, and musical editing with an inventiveness that seems to have barely aged.
