MoMA PS1 is pleased to present a last-chance viewing of FOODTOPIA: después de todo territorio (2021), a new film by Las Nietas de Nonó produced with support from MoMA PS1. The film will screen continuously as part of Greater New York during the last two weeks of the exhibition. FOODTOPIA continues a multimedia project contemplating the over-industrialization of food in the Caribbean, set in the Blasina stream, a natural space threatened by development and water extraction located near the home of Las Nietas de Nonó in the San Antón barrio in Puerto Rico. Both a film and a record of a durational performance, the work documents Las Nietas de Nonó walking through abandoned buildings and streams filled with debris, harvesting wild fruits, hunting an invasive species of iguana, and cooking a meal with their gathered food. These moments were captured during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, when supermarkets and other public spaces were considered sites of infection and danger. In their search for a "foodtopia,” Las Nietas de Nonó reflect on the conditions of both utopia and dystopia inherent in life on an island-colony.
