Surveyed for the first time in New York, the beguiling moving-image studies of Italian director Yuri Ancarani merge elements of documentary and contemporary art in shrewd considerations of labor, social relations, and the expression of identity through the body. With elegance, visual precision, and choreographic flair, Ancarani’s films draw out the psychological and allegorical attributes of real-life people and places.

This screening program revolves around the idea of the trance, which Ancarani finds in settings as varied as the surgical arm of a medical robot, a séance channeling the presence of architect Carlo Mollino, and Haitian ritual dance. Seductive and hypotonic, these often wordless films push both the body and the filmic image to the limits of their expressive potential. “I approach filmmaking as a video maker,” says Ancarani, “The cinema needs video!”
