Jet Lag. 2022. Switzerland/Austria. Directed by Zheng Lu Xinyuan. With Lin Wenqing, Zoe, Zheng Lu Xinyuan. North American premiere. In English, Mandarin, Burmese; English subtitles. 110 min.
Zheng Lu Xinyuan’s follow-up to her breakthrough debut The Cloud in Her Room (New Directors/New Films 2020) is another daring, enigmatic work of auto-fiction. Stranded in Graz in April 2020, the filmmaker chronicles her arduous trip home to China in the midst of a global lockdown. Like Russian dolls, those images of empty airports and quarantine hotels lead the way to an earlier journey, a family trip to Myanmar chasing down a generations-old mystery. Within Jet Lag’s ambiguous timeline and perpetual drift, storylines are not so much parallel as blurred. From this space of disorientation flows pure feeling, as Zheng crafts a frank, revelatory essay-film about intimacy, memory, and diaspora.
