Blood and Sand. 1941. USA. Directed by Rouben Mamoulian. Screenplay by Jo Swerling. With Tyrone Power, Linda Darnell, Rita Hayworth, Anthony Quinn. DCP. 123 min.
Fox’s Technicolor remake of the silent Rudolph Valentino vehicle offers Tyrone Power as the son of a charwoman who becomes the most celebrated bullfighter in Spain, winning the love of a saintly woman of the land (Linda Darnell) while risking it all for the attentions of a thrill-seeking aristocrat (Rita Hayworth, on loan from Columbia). Directed by Rouben Mamoulian, this opulent production nearly collapses under the weight of its rococo art direction, but Hayworth and Darnell generate some sparks in their central confrontation scene. Budd Boetticher, the future Western filmmaker, began his film career as a bullfighting consultant during the location shooting in Mexico.
