In a year when America’s commitment to free and fair elections will be tested, director Camilla Nielsson’s gripping documentary account of Zimbabwe’s 2018 elections provides a frightening lesson on democracy subverted. Covering the country’s first “democratic” election in 40 years (following the ouster of autocrat Robert Mugabe), the film follows the campaign of Nelson Chamisa, a visionary and determined young leader. Balancing hope and frustration, President is a critical story for perilous times.
